A Path of Morning Light
Not a building, but a path of morning light that runs along the edge of the site, slipping down from the hill to the sea and circling back. At Heipaijiao the ground is composed of five elements — the hill lying behind, reefs ranged to either side, sand spread at the front, the sea open to the east, and the Mazu temple at the centre, anchoring them all.
The main volume lies low against the ground, holding tea and coffee, intangible-heritage programmes, surf services and public facilities. As the path advances, that volume breaks apart into a series of niches — for listening to the tide, for watching the swell, or for rinsing off, for meditation, for offerings to the sea. Their walls are laid in oyster shell, a technique taken from the vernacular houses of coastal Huizhou: at once the material record of a Mazu fishing culture and a surface that naturally resists salt spray and corrosion. The niches lift a discontinuous light eave above them, its line held below the ridge of the Mazu temple so that the main axis leaves the temple’s frontal view clear. Underfoot the ground is worked into the ripple of a swell, spreading from the building out to the reefs — what lies beneath one’s feet and what lies far out at sea are the same wave.
The path falls into three stretches, following a swell as it rises, surges and arrives. Along the hill it moves slowly, the niches turned toward the depth of the forest. Before the temple it bends into a gesture of deference, where fishermen at dawn prayer, passing surfers and visitors at rest meet one another. At the sea it reaches to the furthest rock, suspended above the swell, the sightline level with the first wave of the morning.
